The challenge
The objective of the project was to design a new engine cowling capable of reducing the aircraft’s aerodynamic drag while ensuring sufficient airflow through the engine compartment for effective cooling. The new design also had to comply with the geometric constraints specified by the customer.
Our contribution
Using computational fluid dynamics CFD simulations, we evaluated several design alternatives, optimizing both the shape of the engine cowling and the positioning of the radiators within the engine compartment.
Benefits for the client
Thanks to the CFD analyses, and by modifying only the engine cowling, we achieved a 9% reduction in the aircraft’s aerodynamic drag while maintaining the required airflow rate for engine cooling.
