With this technique, certain quantities (parameters) of the calculation model are defined in advance by the user. These are typically assigned a valid range between a minimum and maximum value, within which the optimization software can operate in order to achieve the objective. Typical examples of optimization parameters include plate thicknesses (in FEM models using shell elements), the elastic modulus of the material, the stiffness of connection elements, etc.
The use of an integrated CAE environment such as Simcenter 3D or Simcenter FloEFD makes it possible to maintain associativity between the geometric model and the FEM/CFD model. This makes it possible to effectively perform design iterations on the product shape in order to achieve the desired performance. These iterations can be carried out manually by the operator or automatically driven by the built-in optimizer in Simcenter 3D and Simcenter FloEFD.
In the case of Topology Optimization, an automatic optimization algorithm can indicate to the designer the optimal configuration of a component for achieving the objective while complying with the defined constraints. This technology, originally developed for structural optimization, is now also available for improving the fluid dynamic design of products through CFD analysis and is perfectly suited to modern Additive Manufacturing techniques.
This is a specific case of parametric optimization involving numerous design variables, including the number of plies and the orientation of the composite fibers. It is essential that the results of this optimization are interpreted by an expert in order to implement feasible and economically sustainable layup sequences.
