A story that began in 2002, from the vision of four engineers.

The Origins of SmartCAE

SmartCAE was founded in 2002 through the entrepreneurial vision and passion of four engineers who strongly believed in the strategic value of computer-aided simulation as a powerful tool to support engineering design.

At that time, Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) simulation was still an emerging discipline, rarely included in academic curricula and primarily used by large corporations—the only organizations able to invest in the hardware, software, and dedicated personnel required to manage this technology.

Those were also the years when the first Windows-based PC workstations became available, offering computing performance suitable for industrial simulation at a fraction of the cost of traditional UNIX systems.

At the same time, a new generation of agile software companies began developing simulation codes using modern programming languages and native Windows architectures. These solutions proved highly competitive, delivering strong performance while significantly reducing software acquisition and maintenance costs compared with established enterprise platforms.

Together, these two technological trends made CAE simulation accessible to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for the first time.

Within this evolving landscape, SmartCAE positioned itself as a trusted partner for Italian manufacturing companies, helping them successfully adopt the Virtual Testing philosophy: using computer simulation to evaluate a product's performance and qualification requirements before building physical prototypes, enabling engineers to identify potential design issues early in the development process and optimize product performance.

Growth and Expansion

Over the years, Windows- and Linux-based PCs became the standard platform for engineering applications, establishing themselves as the preferred environment for technical computing.

As a result, the computational power required for simulation became readily available on every engineer's desktop.

At the same time, the engineering software market underwent significant consolidation. Major vendors acquired smaller software companies to build comprehensive portfolios encompassing CAD, CAE, and PLM solutions.

Universities also began incorporating computer simulation into engineering degree programs, helping to spread a solid foundation of knowledge and accelerate the adoption of simulation technologies across the industry.

These developments marked a period of significant growth for SmartCAE. Building on its established expertise in structural analysis, the company expanded its capabilities into complementary disciplines, including Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), automotive crash simulation, and shape and topology optimization.

Thanks to its extensive experience with laminated composite materials, combined with a specialized portfolio of solutions for composite design and analysis, SmartCAE became a trusted partner for leading Italian and international companies operating in the automotive, motorsport, defense, and aerospace sectors.

In particular, SmartCAE has contributed to numerous successful projects involving carbon fiber applications in high-profile motorsport competitions—including Formula 1, GT Le Mans, and the America's Cup—as well as major space programs developed in Italy.

Alongside its consulting activities, SmartCAE has remained committed to helping Italian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) modernize their product development processes through simulation. To support this mission, in 2011 the company became one of the first organizations in Italy to launch a program of free technical webinars, designed to educate manufacturers and engineering teams about the benefits and practical applications of simulation technologies.

Simulation technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace.

We are now in the era of multidisciplinary simulation, where multiple aspects of a product's performance can be evaluated simultaneously, and where CAE is tightly integrated with the broader product development ecosystem, including CAD, PLM, and other engineering tools. This integrated approach enables the creation of a true Digital Twin, allowing engineers to predict, validate, and continuously optimize product behavior throughout the development process.

Simulation tools have also become more accessible than ever before. Software solutions are easier to use, flexible licensing models have reduced the financial barriers to adoption, and skilled engineers with simulation expertise are increasingly available in the job market.

As a result, companies can now significantly reduce time-to-market and development costs by effectively leveraging simulation technologies—even when starting with no prior in-house experience.

With more than twenty years of experience, SmartCAE continues to build its customer relationships around the concept of engineering mentoring: supporting clients at every stage of their product development journey and helping them achieve their technical and business objectives.
